I seem to find these things a lot near the ocean--some kind of old electrical insulators. I believe they are carbon-based, but they register on the detector as nickel.
If you ever come across something where you need to know what type of metal it is you can send it to me. We have a niton xray analyzer which gives you an elemental breakdown of metal complete with most alloy names. I figure knowing what type of alloy can sometimes aid in recognition. I also have some cool scrapper tricks for metal id. Carbon based stuff usually has good scrap value not that you want to scrap that lovely basket of antique tampons.
